Your broker matches
Side by side
Prices checked July 2026 and they change often. Confirm on the broker's own website before opening an account. These are informational matches, not recommendations, and nobody is paying for placement here.
Why these three
What a broker actually does
A broker is the company that holds your money and places your trades. You cannot buy a share without one. They differ in three ways that matter: what they charge, how quickly and accurately they fill your orders, and how good their software is.
Which of the three matters most depends on how you trade. Someone placing forty trades a day and someone depositing once a month need very different things, which is why these picks change with your result.
Before you deposit anything
Check they're regulated
In the US that means SIPC membership and FINRA registration. Look it up yourself rather than trusting the website's own badge.
Use practice mode first
Trade with fake money until your routine is automatic. Schwab's thinkorswim is the usual recommendation for this.
Read the other fees
Withdrawals, inactivity, data subscriptions and currency conversion. That's where the surprises live, not in the headline commission.
Start smaller than feels necessary
The first few months cost you money while you learn, whether you think of it that way or not. Deposit an amount you would not mind losing.
